Best way to fake a colored box behind text?

i working on large document , want have chunks of text stand out colored backgrounds. since living document see significant changes on pretty regular basis, i'd have text flow without breaking separate boxes. there way rules or shading effect? (see image below--the gray boxes i'm trying replicate.) tried shading in order color above first line of text, color goes outside text box, makes complications reflow if text ends starting @ top of page. don't want use inset spacing on text box itself, because won't applicable text within box. i'd love suggestions!
