Moving Premiere Pro files to an external hard drive

my mac book pro hard drive full premiere pro , audio, video , other files feed premiere pro projects. bought external hard drive sub files linked premiere pro files. if move subfiles external hard drive, lose them in premiere pro files on main computer hard drive.

how safely move subfiles and/or primary premiere pro files external hard drive free disk space on main computer hard drive?

thank you.

firstly suggest clearing media caches everytime premiere renders parts of sequences in timeline, store large file on hdd. same after effect , audition if use those. can free surprisingly large amount of space. (it's in preferences menu box).

secondly, avoid @ cost moving , re-linking parts of project - it's absolute nightmare. rather, adopt workflow project files , media 1 particular project stored in own separate folder. when done edit move whole folder off internal storage. if need re-edit, move whole folder onto internal storage. premiere, none wiser , not rack head relinking files (or rack head trying trim projects make space).

thirdly, unless have absolutely no other choice, avoid whole external hard drive faff. fail/get lost/lose track of 1 has footage , unless if organised, it's easy not have external hard drives backed up. finally, if have huge amount of footage , regularly buy more external hdd's cost arm , leg. instead invest in nas box , set have each drive mirrored redundancy. can buy cheap 3.5" hard drives have far larger capacities (up 10tb last looked). if strapped cash, use old computer/raspberry pi (though performance less perfect! may ok purposes), , follow online tutorials.
