Wide Gamut Monitor and the path to Sanity

yes... again.

i promise when figure out going make killer video tutorial

about , still struggling this.

i have read dozens of articles , still alludes me.

read insane thing (you'd think super expert,

when talking color management, have mercy on our eyes...)

read very thing

and read posts here , everywhere. still don't of it.

really, what's point of working in color managed environment

if can see "right" in specific color managed apps

while majority of people see "wrong"?

me

compositing design video.

my workstation:

windows 7

dell 2408wfp monitor. calibrated using x-rite i1displaypro.

software:

photoshop cc2015

after effects cc2015

chrome browser

vlc player

my workflow:

  • in photoshop work in srgb working space color space: the colors less saturated - want them.
  • when save web , embed color profile: the photo looks fine in windows photo viewer - since it's color managed.
  • browse files in os windows explorer: saturated - since it's not color managed.
  • watch in chrome browser: saturated - since it's not color managed.
  • import after effects compositing image: it looks saturated - unless change color management project settings srgb - looks fine. o.k - color management.... can this!
  • export movie after effects , watch in ever popular vlc player: saturated - since it's not color managed. arrgggg

why bother?

it supposed on web people going watch in chrome since vast majority of people watch browse in chrome

if send client going see in chrome. movie going watched in vlc player since it's popular.

so who's going watch stuff saturated. why bother work in color managed environments? for geeks use firefox value 1? or use designated color managed apps??? (i geek no offense)

and if watches in srgb monitor or srgbcolor space profile in os - going saturated.

the way can keep sanity set color management profile in windows srgb

now consistent - saturated. @ least it's consistent.

what guys think?

and thing:

btw there way use x-rite calibrate monitor @ least decent srgb color space?

can't see how that...

thanks in advance

it's simple! you're either viewing data (image, video etc) in color managed app or you're not.

  1. if are, appear same on system. 1 app other.
  2. if not, non color managed app's have 0 idea display profile or data you're viewing. if it's srgb, such app's don't know srgb is. srgb, on srgb-like display looks less worse using else.

this has been discussed here (cut chase, here's 1 post covers issues):

re: best answer: it's real simple!: retouching forum: digital photography review

i assumed photo converted srgb @ point, , therefor color values, while remaining same numerically, shown in different frame of reference.

the values same (in same color space). not software treats them way. here's analogy. ask me: how far live home? answer: 124. 124 miles, inches, feet, meters, kilometers etc? if have pixel value of red 124, it's equally meaningless! 124 what? if red 124 in srgb (versus 124 in adobe rgb (1998)), have scale , meaning number.

in non color managed app's, product has no idea srgb is. or adobe rgb (1998). has no idea display profile is, can't preview value. sends number display.

in color managed browser, or color managed app, product knows scale of number (124 in srgb) , knows behavior of display via icc profile. previews correct, you've calibrated , profiled display.

so if , everyone on planet used color managed browser, use any rgb working space! know scale of numbers , conditions of display using profile. photoshop or elements or lightroom or capture 1 name few icc aware products. lots of people don't use software, browsers, behave way. 'suggest' these products alwaus 'assume' srgb. if use srgb, looks pretty on srgb-like display. doesn't mean match other's see because again, no color management.

color management supposed allow differing people see same rgb values same way. idea mange color. color management number management. answers question, 124 in miles (or kilometers) numbers defined.

bottom line is, don't use non color managed browser. hope (suggest) other's not either. helps srgb , other color spaces.

  1. if 100% of work going web , mobile devices, best use srgb. today! can change, it's will, can ask if painting srgb corner idea. example later.
  2. if 100% of work b&w, srgb fine other rgb working spaces.
  3. the reason srgb aim lowest common denominator (back in 1996). using srgb web will not ensure match other's see of work see! that's super critical understand. it's best, least worst working space post slew of people don't have color managed browsers, don't calibrate , profile displays, work displays they've mucked around osd controls etc.
  4. the way see , other's match use color management! , if so, rgb working space work, in photoshop!
  5. if goal output images print, srgb suboptimal. not produce bad print, it not produce best possible print! i've never seen output device's gamut doesn't exceed srgb somewhere in color space. hugely. i've been looking @ such devices on 20 years.
  6. the video on the benefits of wide gamut working space on print shows this. provides way time , 2 pieces of paper test themselves. other video on color gamut based on science; colorimetry. facts are, many images fit srgb gamut , many not. if clip images srgb, you've given of them sex change operation! can't go backwards. of course, adobe rgb (1998) or wider gamut, no issue going srgb 1 iteration web.

now, in terms of srgb web, today makes sense. might not in future if/when majority of users have wide gamut displays not srgb! here's example of srgb looks like, without color management on wide gamut display, it's ugly adobe rgb if handled same way; without color management!
