Importing to Computer vs Lightroom

i upload photos straight folder sd card. go lightroom, click import , search folder photos are. should upload photos lightroom right away vs. onto computer? lightroom still keep photos once i've imported them computer? working on wedding photos , imported new set photos cannot find 1300+ wedding photos i've been editing. , in process of searching those, newer set of photos disappeared , ones can see random set january. i've tried "all photos" ones in there 97 january. of photos i've imported lightroom can't gone.

you must understand images/photos never in lightroom. import process creates previews of images in lightroom. important know original images being saved in computer (set destination in import dialog)

 

there 2 workflows lightroom users-

 

1. use os (or alternative program) copy camera card , paste/write images folder on hard drive.

    import image previews lightroom using "add" option in import dialog.

 

2. use lightroom copy camera card , paste/write images folder set in destination panel of import dialog. use "copy" option in import dialog.

  

( if possible import camera card 'add' option , re-formatted card, delete images. current versions of lr designed prevent happening.)

 

option 2. has advantages of being one-step process, , allowing re-naming, developing preset, key-wording, , embedding camera calibration.

 

you must adopt backup plan will- 1. save backup of catalog when exit lightroom, , 2. backup image files hard-drive physical location (hard-drive, etc)
