Shrinking an .ai file so it's easier to work with

hi,

 

i'm working on project need apply pretty large (11mb) , detailed vector of wood promotional tricycle.

 

as open vector file, takes forever scale @ , slows down illustrator significantly.

 

is there anyway shrink doesn't slow down system much?

 

or other work around?

have tried using object>path>simplify approach on vector file see if help?
