Hanging indents not working. Weird.

hello,

i thought pretty smart id. but, driving me nuts. have simple hanging indent situation. i've got left indent of 5 mm. and, first line indent of -5mm. so, why second line in paragraph not lining indented first line? it's on left, not quite @ left margin. there no tabs. how 1 control space between numeral in numbered list , type following numeral. seems arbitrary me. said, there's no tab. and, there's no tab value in paragraph style.

you need tab in order text flush left. here there's regular space after number's period , lines after line 1 indented -5mm , wouldn't line first text character in line 1:
